Equipment

  • Equipment needed: Shaker, bar spoon, jigger, strainer, coupe glass or rocks glass

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 oz rye whiskey
  • 1 oz brandy
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange or lemon twist for garnish

Instructions

  • Method for Creating the Fallen Leaves Cocktail:
  • Prepare your glass: Whether you prefer serving this cocktail in a coupe glass or over ice in a rocks glass, make sure the glass is chilled. You can do this by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or by filling it with ice water and letting it sit while you mix the drink.
  • Measure your spirits: Using a jigger, measure 1 oz of rye whiskey, 1 oz of brandy, and 1 oz of sweet vermouth. Pour them into a cocktail shaker.
  • Add bitters: Add a dash of Angostura bitters. This small addition really helps balance the sweetness from the vermouth and brandy with a nice spicy kick from the whiskey.
  • Ice and shake: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 20-30 seconds. The goal is to chill the drink thoroughly without over-diluting it.
  • Strain into your glass: Using a strainer, pour the cocktail into your pre-chilled glass. If you're using a coupe glass, no ice is needed in the final drink. For a rocks glass, pour the drink over fresh ice.
  • Garnish: Add a twist of orange or lemon peel to the rim of the glass. For a little extra flair, you can twist the peel over the drink to release some of the oils and add more aroma.
  • Serve and enjoy: Sip slowly and savor the flavors! This drink has layers of complexity, from the warmth of the whiskey to the richness of the vermouth and brandy.
  • Variations and Substitutions:
  • Whiskey substitute: If you’re not a fan of rye whiskey, you can substitute it with bourbon for a slightly sweeter profile.
  • Dietary needs: For a gluten-free version, be sure to choose a certified gluten-free brand of rye whiskey or bourbon. Most distilled spirits are gluten-free, but always double-check the label.
  • Lower-calorie option: You can reduce the sweetness by cutting the sweet vermouth in half (using ½ oz) and adding ½ oz of dry vermouth. This creates a drier cocktail with fewer calories.
  • Brandy substitute: Cognac can be swapped for brandy if you prefer a more luxurious and smooth texture.
